Walk Montréal
Little Italy and surrounding area

directions_walkLittle Italy and surrounding area
Of all the walks we have done, this one stands out as one of the best! It will take you thru the heart of Little Italy, with cafe's restaurants and a warm atmosphere. Beautiful church's, friendly parks and nice alleys too. Little Italy is snuggled in between Villeray, La Petite-Patrie and Mile-Ex. We started at Jarry Park (89 acres), where the Montreal Expos formerly played at the Jarry Park Stadium, which it now has the IGA Stadium, hosting the Canadian Open tennis tournament. Walking south on St. Laurent Boulevard, you will pass the old Institute for the Deaf and Mute (built in 1917) at 7400 St. Laurent. When you get to the corner of Jean Talon East, walk east to St. Dominique and then south to Shamrock Avenue. In this little area bordered by Shamrock, Casgraine, Mozart and Henri-Julien streets, will be the old Fire Station No. 31 (7041 Saint Dominique), built in 1931, it is a beautiful Art Deco building; the newly built Place Shamrock, an outdoor place of rest and leisure; and the Jean-Talon Market, opened in 1933 it is the largest market in Montreal and the largest open-air market in North America. This used to be the space where the lacrosse field for the "Shamrock Lacrosse Grounds" club stood.
If you walk south on Henri-Julien Avenue, at the corner of Dante Street you will see the Notre Dame de la Defense School (6841 Henri-Julien Ave.) ,built in 1933, it too is a remarkable style of Art Deco. And right across the street is the magnificent Notre Dame de la Defense Church/ The Church of the Madonna della Difesa, (6800 Henri Julien Ave), built in 1919 in the Romanesque architecture style and is designated a National Historic Site of Canada. If you turn around and walk north on Henri-Julien, turn east on Rue Belanger and at the corner of St. Denis Street, you will find the Rivoli Theatre (6906 rue Saint-Denis), built in 1926 and the Theatre Le Chateau (6956 rue Saint-Denis), built in 1931. Both of these theatres were built in the splendid Art Deco style. Continue east on Belanger to Saint-Hubert Street, you are now in the Rosemount La Petite-Patrie area.
Turn south on Saint-Hubert and you will walk thru the outdoor shopping mall on both sides of the street. Plaza Saint-Hubert is undergoing big renovations and construction as well. You will walk by the United Theatre / Theatre Plaza (6505, rue Saint-Hubert, corner of Beaubien), built in 1922. Walk to the corner of St.Zotique, turn west and you will find the St.Albans Hall building (760 Rue Saint-Zotique East), built circa 1911. This is an interesting building, as there was a St. Albans Church at this corner as well. Many beautiful Green Alleys in this neighbourhood. Walk south on Chateaubriand Avenue to Beaubien Street East, turn right and walk west and at the corner of Beaubien and rue Saint-Vallier is the Eglise Saint-Edouard (6500 rue Saint-Vallier), built in 1909. Continue walking west on Beaubien and at corner of St.Denis is the Savings Bank (400 Beaubien East), built in 1919. If you deviate north on St. Denis you will see the Merchant's Bank of Montreal,(6699 St. Denis), built in 1914. Return to Beaubien and walk west to St. Laurent Boulevard, walk north and you will arrive at Little Italy Park , between Clark Street and St.Laurent blvd. Continue walking north on St.Laurent to Dante Street. Turn right on Dante, and you are walking thru the heart of Little Italy.
Cafe's, pizzaria's, restaurants, etc... Enjoy!!
